XS Entertainments Clubbing Events Cornwall - Fun Loving Criminals

Date: 19/7/2006 Price: £7.00
This summer the Fun Lovin’ Criminals are stopping off for a couple of days to enjoy the delights of the West Country coast and play a couple of shows for Xs who are also offering the Xs yacht to the band and the company of the Xs Showgirls (as seen in the VIP lounge at Miss Pole Dance UK).

The band are playing two dates at the Barracuda Club, 22nd & 23rd of August… But, Xs are planning a lil surprise for Huey, Fast and The Rhythm Man… All gig goers join the party in fancy dress true Kernow style… The theme? FUN LOVIN’ CRIMINALS of course!! Enjoy!

We say FUN LOVIN’ CRIMINALS… You shout Scooby Snacks… but there’s more, and this is the story…

The band formed in 1993 when Huey met Fast behind the bar at New York’s Limelight. Fast was already playing in a kinda techno band called Moses On Acid with drummer Steve-O. Huey was playing a lot of blues at the time and soon started writing with Fast. Huey and Fast recruited Steve-O, and Fun Lovin’ Criminals were formed. The 3 friends became flat mates and soon convinced the manager of the Limelight to give them a gig at the club.

Their sixth performance was seen by the head of A&R for EMI who passed them a card and said “give me a call”. The band were booked for a two week recording session but finished all their recordings in just 3 days and spent the rest of the time running up huge alcohol bills waiting for EMI to wake up to what was happening.

Instead, one year on, EMI released the debut album ‘Come Find Yourself’ which spawned hit singles ‘Fun Lovin’ Criminals Kings of New York’ and their 1st no1. ‘Scooby Snacks’. The Fun Lovin’ Criminals could not have been more right on with their timing. Funk and Rock and Hip-Hop beats and Huey’s story-telling rap style gave inspiration to millions of kids and created a new style picked up by bands like Limp Biscuit, Kid Rock and Everlast. The world would never be the same again!

The guys toured the world for two years, then released album no2. ‘100% Columbian’. The 1st single to be taken from the album was ‘Love Unlimited’. A tribute to Barry White who introduced Huey to the ways of women and how they suddenly became “the most beautiful things on God’s green earth”. ‘Southside’, single no.2 is as Huey puts it their “Heavy Metal anthem” and is the rockiest track on ‘100% Columbian’.

It is somewhere around this time that Steve-O the drummer “went a little crazy and departed to Peru” in the words of Huey. Steve-O was replaced by the incredibly talented but just as crazy Mackie.

Album no.3 was Mimosa, recorded in part on Maui Hawaii. Huey says, “It’s a collection put together cos we needed to make some money for Christmas presents. If Celine Dion can do it, we can too!” Mimosa was a lounge album and the record company were not behind it, but the band assured them that it was a temporary stylistic change and that they would be back in the new year with a full on FLC album.

They certainly didn’t disappoint and in 2001 they released the amazing Loco. With opening track ‘Where the Bums Go’ as a wake up and shake off of the ‘lounge’ sound. Loco also spawned the hit ‘Loco’ with the most politically incorrect video in history and ‘Bump’ with Jodie Kid starring as “the finest girl in Huey’s life”.

FLC released ‘A Bag of Hits’ (best of album) and their film debut ‘Maui Homicide 2000’ followed by album no.6 ‘Welcome to Poppy’s’.

About this time, the band got yet another drummer. The UK native, Frank ‘The Rhythm Man’. The Rhythm Man is having the time of his life touring with Fun Lovin’ Criminals.

And now with four ‘proper’ albums, one ‘lounge’ album, a DVD and a ‘best of’, The Fun Lovin’ Criminals return with their latest album ‘Livin’ in the City’.

The album was recorded on an especially kitted out 40ft yacht anchored in New York’s Hudson River. The good ship DiFontaine houses an immense array of equipment specially selected by Mc Large, Fisty Cuffs and The Rhythm Man along with long time recording cohort Captain Tim Latham. The band and the crew eventually headed to the open water, sailing from New York to the Irish shores aboard the DiFontaine.

The album ‘Livin’ in the City’ is an ode to the city in which they live and love. The album’s intensity was such that on the final day of mixing, Huey took his mate King’s pink Strat and smashed in on the floor. “It was very cathartic and I felt a lot better but King still hasn’t forgiven me. I gotta go buy him another pink Strat”.

Supporting the ‘Crims’ will be Educated Animals, currently on tour around the UK, supported by a huge underground internet following these guys made there name by playing house parties, beach parties and cyber gigs.
